DECO Engineering at the 50th PREWIN Meeting: Innovation and Best Practices in Waste-to-Energy

Željko Milutinović, Deputy Director Energy Department and Miloš Vujović, Project Manager Energy Department represented DECO Engineering at the 50th PREWIN Meeting, held in Istanbul, Türkiye, on 11–12 June 2026.

PREWIN (Performance, Reliability and Emissions Reduction in Waste Incineration) is a European network established in 2000 with the mission of improving the performance, reliability, and environmental sustainability of Waste-to-Energy facilities across Europe.

DECO Engineering joined the network contributing to a community that has grown to 222 participants (by March 2026) from 24 European countries.

The two-day expert meeting gathered engineers, plant managers, consultants, and equipment manufacturers working in energy recovery from waste. The first day focused on exchanging operational experience and discussing innovative solutions aimed at improving efficiency, reliability, and environmental performance of Waste-to-Energy facilities.

Key topics included:

  • Grease-free and wear-resistant bearing solutions
  • Corrosion mitigation strategies to improve plant availability
  • Wear prevention and boiler slagging management
  • Latest developments in corrosion, erosion, and fouling mitigation technologie

A highlight of the event was the technical visit on the second day to Istanbul’s Waste Incineration and Energy Production Plant, Türkiye’s first and Europe’s largest Waste-to-Energy facility.

The plant operates three processing lines, treating approximately 3,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste per day, with an annual capacity of around one million tonnes. With a net electrical output of 85 MW, it supplies energy to approximately 1.4 million people while contributing significantly to sustainable waste management.

Events such as PREWIN provide valuable opportunities to exchange knowledge, strengthen professional networks, and stay at the forefront of technological developments shaping the future of sustainable energy and waste management.
